SCRIPTURE:
The days of our life are seventy years—Or even, if because of strength, eighty years; Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow, For it is soon gone and we fly away.
(Psalm 90:10 AMP)
DEVOTIONAL:
This scripture refers to the Israelites journey in the wilderness. Because they were rebellious, complaining, and had worshiped the idols of Egypt instead of the God who delivered them from captivity—their lives were actually cut short.
Seventy or eighty years is what has commonly become associated with a normal life span on the earth today. However, that’s not God’s original intention for mankind. Look at what God said in Genesis: “Then the Lord said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive and remain with man forever, because he is indeed flesh [sinful, corrupt—given over to sensual appetites]; nevertheless his days shall yet be a hundred and twenty years’” (Genesis 6:3, AMP).
This resolute declaration by the LORD came at a time when reprehensible corruption had filled the earth. Yet, His undeserved mercy and grace prevailed. How much more can you and I, as His children filled with the redeeming life of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, expect to live long on the earth . . . to 120 or until Jesus returns!
PRAYER:
Dear God, I thank you for Your promise of long life. Guide me in making wise decisions and living holy—set apart for Your glory and fit for the Master’s use—today, and all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
